Meagan Strmšek is one busy girl with school and work so finding time to write the Triglav Newsletter was nearly impossible. It was mentioned that attendance was down at picnics so I volunteered my services again to continue on with the newsletter. I think it is vital that our members are informed on a regular basis as to what is happening at Triglav Park. We all need reminders sometime as to dates of meetings, dates of picnics, and when help is needed at the park. I will do that and more. It's good to be back. Thanks Meagan, for your past contributions to the newsletter.

The Consul General visits Triglav 9/10/06           To top of page
Our Membership meeting on September 10th ended on a high note when we  received a phone call from Mr. Menčhak with news that The Consul General of Slovenia, Dr. Zvone Žigon, was in town and wanted to make a short visit to Triglav. Dr.Žigon was invited to the Milwaukee area by The Slovenian Women's Union of America, Branch 12. So we had a decision to make. Should we stay or should we go? After many seconds of thought, we all decided to stay and greet him. Dr. Žigon was accompanied by his wife, Irena, his sister, Branka Sustersič, his brother-in-law Jože Sustersič along with Virgina Strukel and Al Jelinek from the SWUA. Unfortunately the weather was pretty raunchy.......chilly, raining, and just ugly.  Franjo Mejač gave them all a short tour of our park and presented Dr. Žigon with a brand new Triglav T-shirt. All had a great time singing Slovenian songs and listening to Dr. Žigon tell us about his duties as Counsul General. He also made a strong statement regarding our park. That was, "You have one of the most beautiful settings to celebrate our Slovenian heritage here. You should never, ever, let it deteriorate. Be proud of what you have and make an effort to get everyone involved in Triglav's future." Mr. Menčhak was kind enough to take some pictures which will appear in the next Domovina and will be put up on our website. Thanks to Dr. Žigon for taking the time to join us at Triglav.

Vinska Trgatev 9/17/06          To top of page
"What a day" was the common theme at the annual Vinska Trgatev held at, none other than, Triglav Park. Great food started the day off. Then an outstanding bolina tournament had everyone on the edge of their seat. More on that later. And if it that wasn't enough, the talented Grant Kozera played his Slovenian style music that kept everyone entertained for the day. Grant has been booked at the Vinska Trgatev like, since forever. He's always been a great supporter of Triglav and we appreciate his talent and generosity so much.

Now, that bolina tournament.......................................
Eight teams, representing all the Slovenian fraternal organizations that make up USPEH, The Milwaukee Slovenian Retirees, The Fun-O-Leers, SLOGA, KSKJ, SNPJ, The Slovenian Women's Union, Triglav Park, and The USPEH Chorus, played on our beautiful manicured courts. There was a lot of noise coming from that area (that would be cheering and laughing) and when it was over, win or lose, everyone came down to the dom to have a drink to recollect as to what just took place. I don't have the scores but here is what went down. Triglav beat The Slovenian Women's Union, Sloga beat The Milwaukee Slovenian Retirees, SNPJ beat KSKJ, and The USPEH Chorus beat The Fun-O-Leers. Then the four winners were off to the play offs the next day, Monday, at Veterans Park in West Allis.

The sun was shinning bright out of the west that Monday, but not so much on our Triglav team. It wasn't for a lack of trying. Ivan Bambič, Charlie Strmšek, Franjo Mejač, Janez Mejač, and Frank Mejač played their best but it just wasn't good enough on this day. Unfortunately, we lost right out of the box to The USPEH Chorus. SLOGA then defeated SNPJ. So it was The USPEH Chorus against SLOGA for the championship. It went back and forth and then forth and back. All I knew was that beer and hor-derves were waiting for us all at Cheers on 44th & Mitchell. SLOGA finally pulled off the big win thanks to Ed Vidmar, Connie Vidmar, Ed Shircely, Lois Boerner! Congratulations to SLOGA, the 2006 bolina tournament champions!. Everyone will be back next year and Triglav will be ready. You can count on  it. It was a great effort on display by everyone. Congratulations to all.

Mr. Edward Gallun:          To top of page
On September 21, 2006, at the age of 90, God called Edie Gallun home. Although he was not a member of the Triglav Society, Mr. Gallun was a proud Slovenian and supported Triglav.  For those of you who grew up on the south side of town, around the old St. John's on 9th and Mineral, then I am sure you remember Mr. Gallun. He owned a grocery store, "Gullun's Market and Music", where he made and sold delicious Slovenian sausages.  Mr. Gallun also loved to play the accordion for customers as he did for our Dance Group when we performed at the Holiday Folk Fair. Funeral services were held on Monday 9/25/2006 at St. John the Evangelist. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Elsie, one son and four daughters, 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Our Website:          To top of page
I've put in a lot of hours into this site but I have to say...........It's a fun job. I enjoy doing it. I hope you enjoy Triglav's website too.

I've rearranged the Photo page on the website. I made it easier to navigate through the pictures. I'll be putting more pictures up so check back from time to time. As you know, there is a "Newsletter" button to get to this, and upcoming newsletters. At the top of this page there is a link to back issues or "Archived issues" of Triglav's newsletters. It's fun to go back to see what was going on a few years ago.

Also, with much help from Helen, I put up a link to "Our Language". I thought it would be great for those of us who do not know the Slovenian language to get acquainted with it. I'll be adding more to this page also so check back and learn with all of us.

I put a link to Grant Kozera's website on our site and he did the same for us on his website. This should bring in more business for us next picnic season. That should do it for this newsletter. Now you're up to date.
Craig
